Required Gear

5-6 HOUR Required Per Person

  • Bicycle. Standard own-powered mountain, cyclocross, or hybrid bike. Road bikes (skinny tires) are not allowed. 2″+ mountain bike tires or 40c+ gravel/cross tires highly recommended.
  • Bike helmet
  • mylar blanketEmergency/space/mylar blanket – full size, metallic style, $2-$3 each at Meijer, outdoor/camping store or online. Buy early, local supplies often run out.
  • Whistle 
  • Water-resistant jacket. We may drop this from required list depending on weather.

5-6 Hour Required Per Team (including solos)

  • suunto-a-10-compass 150wCanoe or kayak, paddles. Bring your own or rent. Duct tape your name and team # on the seat. One rental boat for two- and three-person teams (you can bring your own seat for the middle). Two rental boats for four-person teams.  Kayak for solos.
  • Mobile phone, fully charged, powered off and sealed in waterproof or double-ziplocked bag
  • Compass, must be base plate or sighting type
  • Waterproof protection for maps (zip lock bag, map case, and/or contact paper)
  • compression bandage 125w4 x 25 mg Benadryl/ diphenhydramine (epi-pen if prescribed)
  • 4 feet of compression bandage
  • Hydration pack or water bottles, filled

18-HOUR Required Per Person

  • Bicycle. Standard own-powered mountain, gravel or cyclocross bike. Road bikes (skinny tires) are not allowed. 2″+ mountain bike tires or 40c+ gravel/cross tires highly recommended.
  • Bike helmet
  • Front lighting system – headlamp or bar-mounted white light (both is ideal)
  • Flashing red tail light (fully powered; at night)
  • Headlamp (can be same as used for biking) or flashlight
  • 70 oz. of hydration capacity
  • Whistle 
  • 2 twelve-hour chemical light stick – minimum of 4” length (zip tie to life vest)
  • 2 zip ties to tie chemical light to life vest
  • mylar blanketEmergency/space/mylar blanket,  full-size, metallic style, $2-$3 each at Meijer, outdoor/camping store or online. Buy early, local supplies often run out.
  • Water-resistant jacket. If the forecast calls for good weather, we may drop this requirement in advance of the race

18-HOUR Required Per Team

  • Canoe or kayak, paddles. Bring your own or rent. One rental boat for two- and three-person teams (you can bring your own seat). Two rental boats for four-person teams. Kayak for solos.
  • Mobile phone, fully charged, powered off and sealed in waterproof or double-ziplocked bag
  • 6 twelve-hour chemical light sticks – minimum of 4” length, in case there are two paddle sections (two back-ups since they sometimes fail)
  • 4 zip ties per boat for chemical lights (bow and stern)
  • Water purification (filter, UV or iodine tables) method
  • Compass, must be base plate or sighting type
  • compression bandage 125wWaterproof protection for maps (zip lock bag, map case, contact paper)
  • 8 x 25 mg Benadryl/ diphenhydramine (epi-pen if prescribed)

Recommended 

  • Water filter/LifeStraw or iodine tablets
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Synthetic, wicking t-shirt
  • First aid kit (gauze pads, band-aids, medical tape, etc.)
  • $5-10 cash for emergency purchases
  • Trail running shoes
  • Outdoor/athletic socks
  • Food (energy gel, bars, etc.)

  • Tire pump and/or CO2 cartridges
  • Chain repair tool

Prohibited Gear

  • GPS that allows you to determine your location on a map is not allowed. A GPS watch is ok, but only to check your route after the race
