Required Gear

6-Hour Race

Provided

  • Canoes and kayaks, paddles, PFDs. We will order several dozen boats which will be available on a first come, first-served basis. You may bring your own kayak or paddleboard if you wish.

Required Per Person

  • Bicycle. Standard mountain, cyclocross or road bike. Front shock recommended. Tandems allowed (but don’t qualify for prizes). Road bikes not allowed on singletrack trails. You can rent a bike from SpinDrift Cyclesports for $30. Contact them directly.
  • Bike helmet (must be specifically approved for biking)
  • Whistle 
  • mylar blanketEmergency/space/mylar blanket – Full size, metallic style, $2-$3 each at Meijer, outdoor/camping store or online.
  • 30 oz. of hydration capacity on each person throughout the race
  • Water-resistant jacket and tights/pants. If the forecast calls for good weather, we will drop this requirement in advance of the race

Required Per Team (including solos)

  • Mobile phone, fully charged, powered off and sealed in waterproof or suunto-a-10-compass 150wdouble-ziplocked bag
  • 4 x 25 mg Benadryl/diphenhydramine
  • Compass (base plate or sighting type)
  • compression bandage 125wWaterproof protection for maps (zip lock bag, map case, and/or contact paper)
  • Compression bandage (min. 4′)


12-Hour Race

Required Per Person

Required Per Team (including solos)

  • Canoes, double or single kayaks, paddles, PFDs. Rentals available. You may bring your own boats and paddle gear. If bringing your own boat, we’ll assume you’ll have paddles and PFDs. If not, email me. Canoes must be suunto-a-10-compass 150wopen-bowed and have two or more actual seats. Hard-shelled or inflatable. Sit-on-top kayaks are allowed.
  • Mobile phone, fully charged, powered off and sealed in waterproof or double-ziplocked bag
  • 4 x 25 mg Benadryl/diphenhydramine

Recommended 

  • Water-resistant jacket (weather-dependent; a cold driving rain can quickly cause hypothermia. If the forecast calls for good weather, we will drop this requirement in advance of the race.
  • Long pants, tights, long-sleeved shirt (weather-dependent)
  • Synthetic, wicking t-shirt
  • Contact paper or clear tape to waterproof your instruction sheet and map (at Meijer in household goods)
  • First aid kit (gauze pads, band-aids, medical tape, etc.)
  • $5-10 cash for emergency purchases
  • Trail running shoes
  • Outdoor/athletic socks
  • Food (energy gel, bars, etc.)
  • Spare tires
  • Tire pump and/or CO2 cartridges
  • Chain repair tool

We recommend Gazelle Sports, Bill & Paul’s Sporthaus, and West Michigan Bike & Fitness for the items above. Not every store has every product so call ahead if you aren’t sure. They sponsor many of our races so please thank them when you stop in.

Bill & Paul’s is offering a 10% discount up until the day of the race on the following with proof of registration: hydration products, trail footwear and socks, compasses/navigation tools, fitness watches (except Freestyle or Timex), headlights, nutrition, and paddlesport clothing.

Prohibited Gear

  • GPS that allows you to determine your location on a map is not allowed. A GPS watch is ok, but only to check your route after the race
  • Motorized anything
  • ArtPrize only: Shoes with spikes (can damage venue floors). Recessed cleats on bike shoes ARE allowed.
